Veracruz: Oldest port city in the Americas, Veracruz has been the door to our country for a half millennium, displays a distinctive historical city full of color, music and dance. Baptized with the name of la Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz by the one and only Hernán Cortés, the municipality of Veracruz was the fist one to be founded by the Spanish conquerors in the New World; main reason for which was used as starting point in the conquest of Mexico, as well as main communication port between the old continent and the New Spain.

 

   
 
 
       
Activities and Sightseeing
 

We recommend you to visit the following sights in Veracruz:

 
 

Centro Histórico: El zócalo a lovely place full of people and tradition, on Thursdays and Saturdays is nigh of Danzón.

Palacio Municipal a beautiful building house of the oldest government institution of America. The Cathedral was
built in 1731.

Zona Portuaria: Two blocks from the zócalo is the port, an elegant area with important buildings, a market and the

traditional coffee shop café la Parroquia.  Keep on walking to the lighthouse and enjoy a perfect view of the pier.

Castillo de San Juan de Ulúa:  A historic fortress built to protect Spanish treasures from the Caribbean pirates,

after became a jail.

Baluarte de Santiago: Remnants of a stone wall that encircled a good part of the city to protect it. There were 8 baluartes

and this is the only one remaining. The museum exhibits a collection of pre Columbian jewelry called Las Joyas
del Pescador.

Museo Histórico Naval: located beside Military Naval School, exhibits flags, scale boats, navigation instruments

and weapons.  

Acuario de Veracruz: This is the 8th aquarium most visited in the world, owns species from the entire world.

  Exhibits turtles, sharks, crocodiles and more.

Museo de la Ciudad: Renovated in the year 2000 this museum has a lots of paintings and diagrams explaining the

history of the city from Pre-Columbus time to present days.

Ecotourism: Several agencies offer activities such as rafting, rappel, hiking and camping.  The area is known for

the practice of these sports.

Boca del Rio: A suburb of the city 20 km south from downtown, is a commercial and modern neighborhood with

a famous cuisine with lots of restaurants offering exquisite sea food, while you eat enjoy the traditional music
(marimba).
 

La Antigua: During almost 75 years the port of Veracruz was located in this area. Now is called the Old Veracruz

(La Antigua). This pretty town conserves a good part of its buildings such as Casa de Cortés, once home of the
conquistador (conqueror). La Iglesia del Cristo del Buen Viaje dating to the mid-17th Century. The building Edificio
del Cabildo built in 1523, the first Spanish Government office in Mexico. And the Emerito del Rosario a gorgeous
church finished in 1524 as the first Christian church in America.

Carnaval in Veracruz: a time of joy and extravagance, a famous celebration dating back to 1866 taking place every

year 9 days after the 40 days of Lent.

Getting Around
 
       
 

Almost every sight is within walking distance of the Zócalo, is also easy and safe to get a taxi just try to settle a price before getting in the vehicle. You can also use public buses and vans. If not rent a bike on Camacho at Bolivar, along Villa del Mar Beach.
