Catemaco, magic city full of mysticism and nature. The most visited city in the region Los Tuxtlas embracing Lagoon, sorcerers, gastronomy and jungle. Located at the foothills of the sierra de los Tuxtlas, south from the state of Veracruz, Catemaco stands out for its famous lagoon and extensive biodiversity but, above all, because of the magic surrounding this marvelous location. We recommend you to visit the following sights in Catemaco:

 
 

Laguna de Catemaco: The city is surrounded by a stunning lagoon. There are two swimmable beaches Playa

  Hermosa y Playa Azul; you can practice water sports such as kayak, nautical sailing ship, swimming and sport
  fishing.  Catemaco is well-known for its sorcerers (brujería and limpias).

Boat ride: Take a tour on a boat, (lancha) that departs from Malecon. The standard route takes you to “monkey island”

(isla de los changos) where a loud colony of mandrills where brought from Thailand for scientific experiment at the
  University of Veracruz; 25 years later the monkeys are still alive.  The next stop is la Isla de las Garzas, then the cave
  where a local fisherman Juan Catemaco had a vision of the Virgin Mary. Another stop is the ecologic reserve
  Nanciyaga, an ecotourism project that consists of in log cabins, restaurants, temazcal, handicraft shops,
  turtle and crocodile breeding ground. 

Sontecomapan: (18 km from Catemaco) a gorgeous lagoon full of life with saltwater that empties into the sea.

  There are small boats for excursions that take you to the beach and go through the canals showing the wild fauna
and vegetation. (manglares, black crabs, reptiles, birds).

Beach Zone: Northeast of Sontecomapan there is an amazing display of beaches Playa Jical, Playa Escondida

(is safe place to camp), Playa Balzapote. The route ends in Montepío a small fisherman town settled in a region
of jungle and waterfalls. Visit the beach and arrange a guided tour to the jungle and to the waterfall of Revolución.

How to get around

     
 

Almost every sight is within walking distance of the Zócalo, is also easy and safe to get a taxi just try to settle a price before getting in the vehicle. You can also use public buses and vans.
